Of course Prabhupada did not want changes made to any of his books but he very strongly forbade the BBT from making any changes at all to his Caitanya-caritamrta once it was printed. Prabhupada forced them to print it very quickly and they wanted to add new paintings and ‘finish’ paintings that were already in the book after it was printed Mithiladhisa Prabhu, a friend of Radhaballabha, relates the situation as follows:“Soon after the intense marathon for completing the publication of Caitanya Caritamrita, Radhaballabha Prabhu approached Srila Prabhupada and mentioned that the artists are now completing the paintings in preparation for the second printing. To this, Srila Prabhupada replied “No changes”. A further attempt was made to explain, stating that there were to be no actual changes, but that the same painting would simply be completed because there was insufficient time during the marathon, and that the paintings were actually published in an unfinished state.

Srila Prabhupada replied to him again, “NO changes”.“Confused by Srila Prabhupada’s previous responses, Radhaballabha again tried to explain the situation. The short time frame of the publication marathon had prevented the paintings from being completed. They were now to be finished by the artists, re-photographed and in the next printing, the same picture, same size, everything the same except for the finishing touches, would be placed in the exact same spot in the book. Srila Prabhupada now appeared angered and replied again, but this time more forcefully, “NO CHANGES!!!”.But in spite of Srila Prabhupada’s very forceful demand that the BBT make no changes to his Sri Caitanya-caritamrta the BBT decided to make extensive changes to the book anyhow, in direct defiance of Srila Prabhupada’s order. Dravida (Jayadviata’s partner in changing Prabhupada’s books) went to Australia and stayed at the New Govardhana farm in the 1990’s and sat down and changed “whatever he thought was worth changing” in Prabhupada’s Sri Caitanya-caritamrta.

There were no guidelines for what he was to change, he did not keep any records of what he changed or even tell anyone else in the BBT what he changed. He had the authority to change anything at all that he wanted to change. No one, not even Jayadvaita, knew what he had changed. And since then, without even knowing what has been changed, the BBT has been printing this unauthorized version of Srila Prabhupada’s Caitanya-caritamrta.So Prabhupada’s original 17 Volume Caitanya-caritamrta has been unavailable for more than fifteen years now. I was treasurer for a while then.They were large, at least the size of the standard CCs of today, hardbound, well-presented, with a jacket of almost mustardy-green color, though my memory’s not the best. And they came out before the full set (after the TLCs?).I don’t think I was dreaming; and I’m surprised that I can’t find any mention of them anywhere, so far. I could try Dhananjaya, Akshobhaynanda, or Sudarshan, or.?Any suggestions?

But ISKCON’s printed version of Caitanya-caritmrta is not very changed. It has some changes, but not many However they have made many more changes and the current digital version they have is quite different, I am not sure if they have printed this or not. BBT policy is every printing must be different. So they have a policy of changing Prabhupada’s books every time they print them, guaranteeing that every printing is further and further away from the original teachings of Srila Prabhupada. Right now I only have a newer SB, but I have a first edition single-volume CC, which was published “on the 7th anniversary of the disappearance day of Srila Prabhupada” (it doesn’t show an actual year). That sounds like 1984 to me, so I am wondering if this version is the same text as the original.

It does not have any sanskrit at all, only English, but as a reference and maybe for a quicker first-time read it seemed useful. It was only around $5 at a used book store (I felt so lucky to find it!).I was really surprised that they edited this book actually, mainly due to it’s length. But I was at a class recently where they were reading from the newer CC and following along on my Kindle on which I have all of Prabhupada’s original books (thanks to KrishnaStore.com!), and sure enough, I heard the same sorts of subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle differences that I do when following along to a Gita class. But Prabhupada’s books are all in English with a few small books also in Bengali.The quality of the translations of Prabhupada’s books in other languages is not as good or authoritative as Prabhupada’s original books in English. The quality of the translations of Prabhupada’s books is dependent on the purity and spiritual advancement of the translator. It is not so direct as reading Prabhupada’s original books in English.So we recommend you read Prabhupada’s original books in English.
